Local Public Agency Bridge Information
NHDOT allocates about $15 million/ year to help municipalities significantly reduce the number of municipally owned red listed bridges statewide. Funding is available through the SBA (State Bridge Aid) and the Federal MOBRR (Municipally Owned Bridge Rehabilitation and Replacement) Programs.
Our SBA and MOBRR programs are funded with 80% State or 80% Federal funds with the municipality responsible for the 20% local match. Projects awarded are “reimbursement” type grants in which the municipality covers 100% of preapproved project costs initially and is subsequently reimbursed NHDOT’s 80% share of eligible costs incurred.
Local bridge priority projects are identified using a statewide municipal bridge ranking process incorporating NHDOT bridge inspection data gathered on the approximate 1,700 statewide municipally owned bridges. These inspections are done for all municipal bridges free of charge by NHDOT on a biennial basis or annually if already red-listed (poor condition).
Through the Ten-Year Plan process, NHDOT reaches out directly to the communities with the top-ranked (worst condition) municipal red list bridges to see if they are interested in project enrollment in the municipal bridge program. This is a more straightforward and strategic approach to funding municipal bridges rather than taking applications from communities as we have done in the past.
Over 50 municipal bridges were added to the 2025-2034 Ten Year Plan, and now the municipal bridge aid program is fully enrolled. NHDOT does not anticipate adding additional municipal bridge projects until the 2029-2038 Ten Year process begins (Fall 2026).
