Bridge Work on Route 119 over Connecticut River in Hinsdale

A new bridge will replace the existing structures in October 2024.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT), in collaboration with The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTRANS) announces the start of a multi-year construction project that will ultimately replace the two existing bridges carrying NH 119 over the Connecticut River into Brattleboro, VT with one new 8-span steel girder bridge.

By early to mid-September of this year, people living or traveling in the area of Hinsdale, New Hampshire and Brattleboro, Vermont will begin to see a steady increase in construction activities as the project to replace the existing bridges over the Connecticut River gets underway.  The traveling public can expect some minor delays on NH 119 as the project begins in New Hampshire with tree clearing, utility relocation, bridge abutment work, pier work, and temporary trestle construction as a means to safely progress construction across the Connecticut River and into Vermont.  Some incidental construction and utility relocation work may be encountered in Vermont on VT 142 this season as well, with full reconstruction of a segment of VT 142 to occur during the 2022 construction season utilizing a signed detour.  Construction signs and portable message boards will be used to alert the public.  Uniformed officers and flag persons will be used to safely direct traffic throughout the life of the project.

During the bridge replacement project, construction crews will realign this section of NH 119 completely bypassing the two existing bridges.  The reconstruction of NH 119 will begin approximately 600 feet south of Georges Field Road and extend north and west along the new alignment for 6/10 of a mile where it will connect to VT 142 in Brattleboro, VT with a new intersection that will be approximately 900 feet south of the existing intersection of VT 119/VT142.  The reconstruction of approximately 1700 feet of VT 142 and the construction of a new boat ramp in New Hampshire will be completed during this project as well.  Information on this project is located on this web page.

Reed & Reed, Inc. of Woolwich, Maine is the general contractor for the $61.2 million project with an anticipated completion date of October 25, 2024.
