Daytime Bridge Inspection of the Memorial Bridge, Portsmouth, NH to Kittery, ME

Lane closures will impact traffic during daytime inspections.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) will be performing daytime inspections of the Memorial Bridge between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. beginning October 31, 2023 and extending through November 3, 2023.  This lift bridge carries US Route 1 over the Piscataqua River between Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, ME. The Federal Highway Administration requires this inspection be completed at least every two years.

Traffic lanes on the bridge will be reduced to one lane of alternating two-way traffic, controlled by Uniformed Officers.  This is to allow placement of inspection equipment on the bridge and allow access to various elements being inspected.  Appropriate signage will be placed on both roadway approaches notifying vehicles of the work ahead.

Motorists should remain alert while traveling through the work zone and obey all posted signs. Motorists are also encouraged to sign up for free, real-time construction and traffic related messages (text or email) from https://newengland511.org/.

In addition, a small boat will be used to provide access to inspect elements of the bridge below the roadway surface.  This work will not cause any restrictions to river traffic operating within the navigation channel.

WSP USA Inc. of Merrimack, NH will be conducting this work on behalf of the NH Department of Transportation. The total cost for this work is $138,000.

This schedule may change due to weather conditions.
