New Hampshire Granted $20M for Seawall Reconstruction

Federal, State and Local Officials to announce PROTECT Discretionary Grant funding.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) will join Federal and Local Officials at Rye Harbor State Park on Monday, April 22, 2024, at noon to announce the first-of-its-kind grant dedicated to transportation infrastructure resilience under the Federal Highway Administration’s Promoting Resilient Operations for Transformative, Efficient, and Cost-saving Transportation (PROTECT) Discretionary Grant Program. The awarded PROTECT grant funds will be used to reconstruct seawalls in North Hampton and Rye.

Route 1A is a lifeline for Rockingham County's coastal attractions, yet increasingly frequent storms and floods disrupt its accessibility. To address this, NHDOT is focusing on minimizing closures and streamlining cleanup efforts along the route as extended closures not only hinder emergency response and evacuation, but also create traffic congestion, impacting residents, tourists, and commuters. By bolstering the stone revetments along Route 1A, the project is designed to reduce flooding, structural damage, and post-storm cleanup time, ensuring smoother travel experiences for all.
